Abstract

Background: Nowadays organizations are extremely concerned about factors that impact patient safety. Time pressure is an threaten variable for it. Consequently, nurse should have job conscientiousness trait to decrease time pressure and improve patient safety. Aim: To determine the interactive influences of time pressure and job conscientiousness on patient safety among staff nurses at Oncology Center- Mansoura University. Methods: Descriptive correlational design was utilized. Three tools were used to gather the data namely; time pressure questionnaire, job conscientiousness questionnaire and patient safety questionnaire by convenient (190) of staff nurses was working at Oncology Center-Mansoura University. Results: The majority of staff nurses complain of time pressure, had high level of job conscientiousness and had moderate level of perception about patient safety. Additionally, there is highly statistically significant positive correlation between total job conscientiousness and total patient safety, while there was no relationship between total time pressure and both total patient safety and total job conscientiousness. Conclusion: Increased job conscientiousness among staff nurses did improved patient safety. Recommendations: Establishing a favorable work environment by providing sufficient nursing staff and resources to enhance nurses’ ability to deal with work demands and workloads. Encouraging nurses to share responsibility in multimodal team that enhances job conscientiousness. Conduct of education programs for staff nurses continuously on patient safety, and further studies of research about the effect of time pressure and job conscientiousness on organizational citizenship behavior, work life, burnout, turnover and quality of care.
