Abstract

At the outset, this study is carried out in complementary with the national project for the rehabilitation and lining the irrigation canals in the Egyptian countryside. The project was decided – mainly- for making use of the noticeable amount of irrigation water that is lost by leakage, seepage, and evaporation through the huge network of irrigation canals, with a total length exceeds 32000 kilometers, running on different soil permeability, and in dry-hot weather. These quantities of expected saved water can share, in covering the increasing gap between the needed, and the available quantities of irrigation water that is facing Egypt nowadays.
Since the project, is under the implementation process in the nearby area of Assiut university, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, has assigned to the university, the responsibility of the periodic supervision, and technical follow-up of the project, for solving any technical problems may arise. At the same time for carrying out the needed studies, field measurements, and investigations for estimating and evaluating the expected returns of the project and achieving its goals in Assiut Area.Owing to the multidisciplinary nature of the project, a comprehensive research program was prepared to cover the project axes as follows:
• Choosing a branch canal and its off-takings included in the roll of implementing the project in the study area, to be a good representative case study for the region of the Upper Egypt.
• Conducting all the needed investigations, measurements, and studies for finding out the nature, and mechanical properties of the soil in the understudy area.
• Monitoring and studying the existing situation of the case study network, its performance, and comparing it with that in the design sheets.
• Studying the beneficiaries’ satisfaction with the existing and expected condition of their canals after the completion of the project, and their aspirations of solving their irrigation water problems.
• Performing a quick ecumenical study, through benefit/cost ratio method, to discover the feasibility degree of the project, including the measurable returns, regardless the long term social, cultural, environmental, and moral returns.
Beside the field activities of soil samples collection and testing, seepage measurements and questionnaire survey, enough literaturesurvey also was done, for the availableequations correlate the main involvedparameters affecting the seepage process of the irrigation water through open canalscross-sections.The seeped irrigation water quantities were estimated two times. The first one was carried out using the actual canal’s cross sections, and dimensions, while the second one, was carried out using the designed dimensions.
