Abstract Many human proteins have important pharmaceutical values though they are difficult to be obtained from their natural sources. However, recombinant DNA technologies offer a set of technical platforms for the controlled production of these polypeptides. The tumor necrosis factor, formerly known as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), is an important pro-inflammatory cytokine with a pleiotropic effect. It is involved in immunity and host defense against bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections, in the control of cell survival, proliferation, migration, and differentiation, and as well, it showed powerful anti-tumor activities. Large quantities of TNF-α required for immunotherapy have concerted the efforts towards its production using recombinant DNA technology. Therefore, continuous research for improvement of model systems is necessary to gain more insights into TNF-α production and function. |
