Abstract

The prevalence of valvular heart disease is increasing along with the the increasing population‘s life span. Echocardiography remains the primary imaging modality for initial assessment and for longitudinal evaluation of individuals with valve disease. However, in some instances, information from clinical history and physical examination or other diagnostic tests may be discordant with echocardiographic findings. In these instances, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) is recommended. It provides a view of the entire heart without limitations from inadequate imaging windows or body habitus. It also can obtain imaging data at any imaging plane prescribed by the scan operator, which makes it ideal for accurate investigation of all cardiac valves: aortic, mitral, pulmonary, and tricuspid valves. In addition, CMR is noninvasive, and free of ionizing radiation. Aim of this study was to assess role of cardiac MRI as a non-invasive tool in the evaluation of patients with valvular heart disease in correlation with echocardiography. The current study included 40 patients, 24 males and 16 females, with their mean age 36 years. They presented with valvular heart disease based on clinical and echocardiographic diagnosis. All patients were subjected to careful history taking with certain emphasis on history relevant to valvular heart disease.
