Abstract Effect of growing media and Humic acid on growth and flowering of Calendula officinalis plants This study was carried out in the Nursery of Floriculture, Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Gardening Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University, during the two successive growing seasons of 2020/2021 and 2021/2022. The investigate of this study the effect of different growing media and humic acid (HA) fertilizer on plant growth, flowers production and the chemical constitutes of Calendula officinalis, L. which is considered one of the most important of the winter annuals split-plot was the experiment design with three replications, in both seasons.. The growing media were laid out in the main plots , 100% calcareous soil , 50% calcareous soil + 50%sand , 50% calcareous soil + 50% peeatmoss and 50% calcareous soil + 25% sand + 25% peatmoss . The sub-plots included the different levels of humic acid (HA) fertilizer at 0.00 , 0.50 ,1.00 and 1.50 g/plant added three times during the growing period. The obtained results could be summarized in the follows: 5.1. Effect of different growing media: 5.1.1. Vegetative growth characteristics: The results showed that using the different growing media had significant effect on the vegetative growth characteristics, plant height , number of leaves, number of branches per plant , leaf area (cm2) and dry weight of shoots / plant (g). The highest values of vegetative growth were obtained with growing media of 50% calcareous soil + 50% peeatmoss during the two growing seaons . There no significant differences between growing media of 50% calcareous soil + 50% peeatmoss and 50% calcareous soil + 25% sand + 25% peatmoss for plant height and number of branches per plant in the first and second season. 5.1.2. Flowers characteristics: Flowers characteristics responded significantly to the different growing media. Growing media of 50% calcareous soil + 50% peeatmoss gave the highest reduction for the time required to flowering stage (48.05 , 47.11 day ) , the maximum number of inflorescences (10.99 , 11.08) , inflorescence diameter - 58 -(6.29, 6.92 cm), inflorescence duration (9.43, 10.38 day) inflorescence dry weight / plant (0.75, 0.83 g / plant) for both seasons |
