Abstract

Shaken Infant syndrome (SIS) is a severe form of infant abuse caused b vigorously shaking an infant, often in anger to stop crying. It occurs mostly in infants under 1 year of age but can occur in children up to 5 years. Infant have large head, heavy brain, and weak neck muscles, so shaking the infant causes the brain to move back and force within the skull causes swelling, bruising, and bleeding which may result in serious brain damage or death. It destroys the infants’ brain cells and prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen. (150-153)
