Abstract
Abstract of thesis:
This research examines the role of open green areas and especially public parks in
enhancing the quality of life (QoL). With a goal of investigating the impacts of urban
parks on the quality of life of the city dwellers. As known, most of the Egyptian cities
especially the cities in Cairo region suffer from Scarcity of green public spaces, that
not only could impair the livability and sustainability of cities but also would affect
the increasing signs of environmental, social, and economic stress.
The goal of research is to study the role of public parks on enhancing the quality of
life in cities from the point that focuses on the final product, and which focuses on
achieving high in quality of user’s needs to reach high in quality park, as raising the
efficiency of existing surfaces through high-quality designs, good management and
sustainable maintenance, which partially compensate for the lack of adequate green
spaces, because it re-utilizes the current stock more efficiently, through the
application on Greater Cairo parks that suffers from environmental problems, weak
social relations, educational, cultural and arts issues.
To achieve this goal, a framework has been proposed a criteria for evaluating the
quality of open green areas, especially public parks, based on the needs of users
within those areas, supporting aesthetic qualities, QoL factors ”supporting social
factors. and interactions, supporting belonging and community development - and
supporting educational and cultural factors, arts and creativity within these areas and
the environmental support ”. Then analysis those standards derived from the
theoretical framework on some of the global public parks, which had an important
role and a positive impact in improving the quality of life in their cities. Then take
advantage of that analysis to support the proposed criteria, add standards, and arrange
them according to priority and importance to assess the quality of open green areas,
especially public parks to improve the quality of life, and then choose three public
parks in Greater Cairo and apply on it the final criteria, which are (Al Azhar Park in
Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, the International Garden in Nasr City. The family in Al-Rehab
City), and the results from the research indicate that the impact of the public parks on
the users and non-users of the residents of the area surrounding the park varies
according to the quality of the park and the quality and diversity of services and
activities provided by the park, and it also depends greatly on the economic and social
level of the users and Non-users of residents of the area adjacent to the park.
