Abstract
Background Continuous Electroencephalography (cEEG) provides information on cerebral physiological state, response to therapy and may aid diagnosis and prognosis. Its goalisto detect abnormalities at a reversible stage and to guide timelyinterventions. Its value appears established, in diagnosis of nonconvulsive status epilepticus, also, in figuring the background patterns carrying the worst prognosis. Aim of the study Evaluation of the cEEG role in diagnosis of causes of coma in pediatric patients and its prognostic value. Methodology Prospective study of sixty patients who were admitted with coma in PICU at Cairo University specialized children hospital and received cEEG monitoring.Clinical data collected included full clinical and neurological examination, cEEG findings recorded initially after admission and finally after treatment completion. We analyzed the role of cEEG in diagnosis and prognosis of coma. Results Sixty patients were continuously monitored (monitoring duration ranged from 1-14 days).Thirty{u2010}two patients had seizures.71.8% captured electroclinical seizures, 28.2% were electrographic only. Severely affected patterns as cEEG background identified to have great risk for mortality whether recorded initially (P0.037), or finally (P < 0.001). Overall mortality was 38.3%, with majority of it in the group with severely affected patterns in their cEEG background
