Abstract

Topic and aims: This study assesses Interferon-alpha in systemic lupus erythematosus, the use of interferon alpha as a biomarker in Egyptian lupus patients and investigates the relationship between interferon alpha and lupus activity. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional descriptive study that carried at outpatient internal medicine clinic of Rheumatology and clinical immunology as well as inpatient internal medicine departments of Kasr Elaini hospital. The study includes 30 Egyptian patients with SLE disease without renal affection, 30 Egyptian patients with lupus nephritis, as well as 30 (age and sex matched) apparently healthy Egyptian volunteers. Serum was used for determination of interferon alpha using ELISA kit that was provided by bioassay technology laboratory, shanghai, China (Cat. No E0076Hu). Results: There is a statistically significant difference in type1 Interferon level between SLE patients without nephritis and control groups with p value< 0.001. There is a statistically significant difference in type1 Interferon level between lupus nephritis patients and control groups with p value< 0.001. There is a statistically significant correlation between type 1 interferon level and ANA titre with a statistical significance (p value = 0.003)
