Abstract

A randomized clinical trial to assess the healing rates of apical periodontitis both clinically and radiographically after single versus multiple visits endodontic treatment with triple antibiotic paste intracanal medicament. Forty-four medically-free participants suffering from necrotic tooth with apical periodontitis were randomly assigned into two equal groups, groups A and B (n = 22 / group). group A (intervention group): Multiple visits endodontic treatment with triple antibiotic paste intracanal medicament. group B (control group): Single visit endodontic treatment. Postoperative pain after 24, 48, 72 hours and one week was assessed using numerical rating scale (NRS). Incidence of analgesic intake and number of consumed analgesic tablets were recorded by the participants. Incidence of postoperative swelling and sinus tract was recorded after one week. Healing (clinical and radiographic) of periapical lesion was assessed at the following periods 3, 6, and 12 months. Results showed that there is no statistically significant difference in the postoperative pain after 24, 48, 72 hours and one week. No statistically significant difference was found between healing in both groups after 12 months. Within the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that: Postoperative pain and periapical healing were similar in the group of multiple visits endodontic treatment with triple antibiotic paste intracanal medicament and the group of single visit endodontic treatment
