Abstract

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood, is caused by insulin deficiency following destruction of the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Both thyroid diseases and diabetes mellitus (DM) are commonly encountered in clinical practice. They can influence each other and the associations between these two conditions have been reported by earlier studies. An in-depth underlying relation between DM and thyroid dysfunction exists. A growing body of evidence pointed towards an array of complex interlinking biochemical, genetic, and hormonal malfunctions reflecting this pathophysiological association. Aim of work: screening of thyroid auto-antibodies [thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (TG)] in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus with diabetes duration of 5 > years. Patients and methods: This is a cross sectional study that had been carried out at the outpatient clinic of Diabetes, Endocrine & Metabolism Pediatric Unit (DEMPU), Cairo University Children{u2019}s Hospital (Abo Elreesh) over a period of 27 months starting January 2015 till April 2017. Anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-TG) were measured in 100 subjects (49 males and 51 females) diagnosed with T1DM
