Abstract

Background and objective: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common childhood disability that is associated with feeding problems and multiple nutritional deficiencies. One of the most common nutritional deficiencies is iron deficiency that leads to anemia with its consequences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of iron deficiency anemia on motor functions and muscle strength in children with spastic cerebral palsy and to determine the relationships between hemoglobin and serum iron levels with motor skills and muscle strength. Materials and Methods: One hundred children with spastic CP from both gender ranging in age from 4-6 years allocated in this study. They were selected from the Outpatient Clinic of Pediatrics, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University. The participated children were assigned into two groups of equal number fifty children in each group. group (A) included fifty anemic spastic CP children and group (B) included fifty non anemic spastic CP children. All children were evaluated for hemoglobin and serum iron levels. Motor skills were evaluated using Peabody developmental motor scale 2nd ed (PDMS-2) while Jamar hydrolic hand dynamometer and Lafayette dynamometer were used to measure handgrip strength and knee extensors strength respectively
