Abstract

Lateral intake is one of the ways of diversions and is used for many purposes such as irrigation of agricultural lands. It also has domestic and industrial uses. The lateral intakes in open channels suffer from many problems. The most serious problem is the diverted sediment inside the intake channel. The sediment depositions reduce the withdrawn capacity in case of thermal power plants, which causes damage to the hydraulic machines; partial blockage at water treatment plants and reduces the flow capacity in the main irrigation canals. The present study was initiated to propose a solution to minimize the bed load transport that enters the lateral intake by studying five different obtuse intake angles with 110{u00B0}, 130{u00B0}, 145{u00B0}, 160{u00B0} and 170{u00B0}. In addition, this study investigated the submerged vanes angles with 10{u00B0}, 20{u00B0}, 30{u00B0}, 40{u00B0} and their relations with the lateral intake angles. In this study, 144 experimental runs were conducted using a movable bed model in main channel and fixed bed model in the lateral intake. Experimental runs were categorized into five groups according to the intake angle and effect of submerged vanes. For each group of experimental, four values of discharge ratios were tested. For each ratio, four width ratios were tested for the intake angle including one width ratio for the effect of vane angle
