Abstract

This study is dealing with the water resources (springs, surface water and flash floods) in the area is in the northern part of Eastern Desert, to the East of Nile Valley; and the geoenvironmental impact of the water usage and flow on the area. The Maaza Plateau is mainly composed of Eocene limestone with different compositions along the plateau, during old pluvial periods the Eocene carbonates plateau was carved dramatically by rain water and many wadis were formed along it, making the will known desert wadis, such as Degla, Hof, Garawy, El Rashrash, Sannur and Atfih wadis. During rain storms water flow through the dry passages of the wadis, since the area changed from humid to arid and hyper arid environment with seasonal rainfall only, the accumulated water may cause severe damage to the villages and cities on the Nile Valley. The accumulated water also works as a strong weathering and erosion agent and start dissolving the carbonate rocks making intense karst features, such as caves and sinkholes in many parts of the plateau along weak fractures and bedding planes. So that study of geoenvironmental hazards is one of the main targets of this work to reduce flash floods and to avoid karstified area in new cities like 15 of May near Helwan and New Beni Suef city. Field study is done to study promising areas for development like downstream of Wadi Atfihi and the middle and downstream of Wadi Tarfa. Several soil, rock and water samples collected to check the chemical and physical properties of soil and water and to investigate the rock types in the wadi beds. Water and soil quality for usage in agricultural purposes studied using different graphs and standards
