Abstract

Background: Diaphyseal humeral fracture accounts for approximately 3% of all fractures, the first line of management is the conservative treatment . for the patients who are indicated for surgical fixation we have different options either the dynamic compression plate ,interlocking nail or other methods of surgical fixation. Aim: To compare the results of the interlocking nail (ILN) versus the result of dynamic compression plate (DCP) for fixation of diaphyseal humeral fracture. Materials and methods: A prospective randomized study was conducted involving 30 patients divided into two groups. Patients were assessed clinically using DASH score and Constant shoulder score) and radiologically at 2 and 6 weeks and at 3 and 6 months. Results: The mean age for the ILN group was 38 ± 16.37 years, while the mean age for the DCP group was 32 ± 13.24 years. All patients were followed up for 6 months. Statistically significant difference was found between both groups as regarding shoulder functional outcome (constant shoulder score and DASH score)and in estimated intra-operative blood loss, image intensifier time, operative time . Although the rate of nonunion in the ILN group was 20% and in DCP group was 6.7% the difference between both group was statistically insignificant
