Abstract

This study aimed mainly to detect the antibacterial activities of some ineffective antibiotics potentiated with plant extracts on pathogenic E.coli isolates. It has been conducted in Microbiology Department, in Kasr Al-ainy Hospital, Cairo University. Subjects of this Study were 100 urine samples from patients clinically suspected to suffer from urinary tract infection. Only 51 samples showed significant bacteriuria. The highest proportion was 55% for E.coli followed by Staphylococcus aureus (27.4%), then Klebsiella pneumonia (17.6%). Norfloxacin, Levofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin were the most effective antibiotic against E. coli isolates. E.coli isolates showed higher susceptibility to the essential oil of Cinnamon, Clove, Marjoram and Thyme than the extracts of Methanol, Ether, Dichloromethane and water. Cinnamon and Marjoram could be a source of constituents that can increase the sensitivity of E.coli to ineffective antibiotics
