Abstract

Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium are parasitic flatworms that infect millions of people in developing countries. A recent report has proved that resistance of the water-rat to S. mansoni might be ascribed to arachidonic acid (ARA)-rich lipids in liver. Reports have shown that ARA is a safe and effective schistosomicide in vitro, and in vivo. Accordingly, it was proposed that ARA increased levels might be responsible for natural attrition of S. mansoni and S. haematobium in resistant rodents. Therefore, the levels of ARA in serum, lung, and liver of rats (resistant) and mice (susceptible) before and post infection with S. mansoni and between mice (semi-permissive) and hamster (susceptible) before and post infection with S. haematobium were compared. Significant (P<0.05) correlation was recorded between ARA content and rodent resistance to schistosomes, implicating ARA as an endoschistosomicide
