Abstract

The present study is a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of horizontal mandibular alveolar ridge augmentation by interpositional block graft versus onlay block graft harvested from the mandibular symphesis.Twenty patients seeking implant rehabilitation for the mandible were selected from the outpatient clinic of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University.10 sites were horizontal augmented by interpositional block graft and the other 10 sites were augmented using onlay block graft. All patients were regularly assessed both clinically and radiographically upto 4 months post-operatively. Statistical analysis showed that both techniques showed a significant increase in alveolar bone width immediately post operative and at 4 months. The mean graft resorption in the interpositional group 4 months post operative was considered non significant while in the onlay group the mean graft resorption was significant. Thus within the limits of this study the following could be concluded: {u271E}Interpositional block grafts offers a viable alternative for mandibular horizontal ridge augmentation compared to onlay bone graft {u271E}Interpositional graft is a more technique sensitive procedure as compared to onlay block graft and requires certain level of surgical experience to be performed successfully
