Abstract

The present thesis is a cognitive study of some selected Egyptian and American proverbs. from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, Metonymy is a conceptual operation in which one entity maps onto the other entity within a single domain at the conceptual level. Lakoff (1987, p.315) states that image- schematic concepts and basic level concepts for physical objects, actions, and states are the base on which the structuring of experience is built.
Metonymy is a basic conceptual phenomenon; it is a mode of thinking that is pervasive in our everyday life as well as in our language. So, the main objective of this thesis is to investigate metonymy in proverbs from a cognitive perspective. To achieve the objective of the thesis, Conceptual Metaphor Theory (1980-2010) and Conceptual Integration Network (2002-2010) are followed in the analysis of the data for the study. These theories are used to examine Metonymy in the Arabic and American proverbs. Furthermore, this dissertation shows the artistic and aesthetic layers of meanings in metonymy. The results of the study show that CIN performs better than CMT does in the study of metonymic proverbs, because CIN contains wider view that permits to blending elements from a number of distinct items together that yield a new item which have unique features from those elements.
