Abstract

Many quay walls throughout Egypt need repairing or replacement. Lots of waterfront structures show heavy deterioration-cracking, wall movement, corrosion of reinforcement, etc. If the foundation is cracked, crooked or weak, The strength and security will be reduced. It is not a noticeable flaw, but it could place the structure itself at risk. The issue of study aims at finding solutions to repair the defect quay in Egypt. This thesis studies a bulkhead failure in Egypt which started to collapse after three months from operation. The wharf comprised of a 6 meter sheet pile wall tied back to a 20 meter continous sheet pile wall. The failure of anchored wall occurred in the tie rods, resulting in 14 centimeter translation over the 8 meter length of the bulkhead. The explanation of failure required underwater dive inspection to investigate the cause. Investigations have revealed the absence of wales installation at the level of tie rods which led to their failure. And thus the failure was attributed to the design errors, the poor compaction of the soil wedge in front of the wall and low material quality of the tie rod’s bolts. The aim of this research is to provide several repairing strategies stem from the latest research works as well as an innovative solution for the defect bulkhead, including little or no disruptive work to the wharf, and finally, to demonstrate the applicability of these alternatives by assessing their behavior in PLAXIS software. The first strategy consists of installing ground anchor system to the failed bulkhead. The second strategy involves a new bulkhead installation outward of the failed bulkhead and filling the space in between the two vertical walls with durable material, and connecting the walls at their
top by a cap. The third and ultimately selective strategy consists of installing a prestressed concrete slab, one end of the slab attaches to a beam from the sea side and the other end attaches to a deadman from the earth side. All three approaches are already applied in PLAXIS, delivering promising results.
Contractors will find in this thesis a reference on the best practices to repair anchored sheet pile quay defects instead of replacing or any disruptive work. Contractors using this study will find the directions to follow in order to choose the good procedure.
