Abstract

Providing good and safe drinking water is worldwide considered as one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be a fundamental issue for public health protection and must be the untimely objective of drinking water providers. Drinking-water quality control has currently been based on the detection of pathogens and toxic substances by means of monitoring programs and compliance with the set standards, relying mainly on indicator physicals, chemical and microbiological concentration levels. However, this methodology is often slow, complex, and costly. Even for sophisticated and well-operated systems, these monitoring schemes have proved to be inefficient in preventing waterborne disease outbreaks. from this evidence, it can be concluded that end-product testing is reactive rather than preventive way to demonstrate confidence in good and safe drinking water. This justifies the need for the formulation of a new approach in drinking-water quality control based on understanding of system vulnerability for contamination and as a preventive means and actions necessary to guarantee the safety of the water supplied to the consumer. The water safety plan (WSP) is a concept for risk assessment and risk management throughout the water cycle from the catchments to the point of consumption. This thesis reviews the implementation of water safety plans for different water supply systems. This was applied to three different models in terms of water source and treatment method. The first model is the Abu Bisht station, works with the natural filtration system of the banks of the rivers. The second model is the Remela Desalination Plant. Third model is the Al-Majed UF unit of surface water. Potassium ferrate was tested for the remediation of the ammonia from Al-Majed water resource. Ferrate is considered as a coagulant/oxidizer, environmentally friendly alternative. Potassium ferrate with a dose of 40 mg/l for the time of 30 min, is very efficient for removal of ammonia and turbidity by 91% and 90%, respectively, this could be used as a pretreatment to enhance the water quality and improve the total performance of Al-Majed WTP.
