Abstract

This was an invitro study designed to compare between the efficacy of chlorohexidine diaceteate varnish, Cervitec Plus and an organoselenium sealant, DenetshieldTM to prevent biofilm formation on human teeth.
45 Premolars extracted for orthodontic purposes were obtained and randomly divided into 3 groups of 15 teeth each. group I was the control while the other 2 groups were denteshiled and cervitec plus.
The teeth were autoclaved to sterility to 0 S.mutans at T0. S. mutans Biofilm was then induced on the respective groups and the reading T1 was taken for each of the groups. At this stage the respective materials under investigation were applied onto the teeth. The reading T2 was meant to be taken just after applying the materials but before biofilm induction on the teeth for the second time but unfortunately, this wasn’t taken because vortexing caused loss Cervitec plus on the tooth surfaces. The biofilm was induced again at this stage and the reading T3 was taken for each of the teeth in their respective groups. The teeth were then subjected to thermal and Mechanical aging for a period equivalent to 5 months. Biofilm was induced again and the reading T4 was taken.
We used vortexing of the teeth to disrupt the biofilm at time points T1, T3 and T4. A bacterial count was then done using both Standard plate count and PCR. The Standard Plate count results could not be used because of the severe contamination that followed suit.
There was a significantly smaller S. mutans count in the control group as compared to cervitec plus group. There were no other significant differences between the groups.
