Abstract

Gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-proteinaceous amino acid. It acts as a chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian Central Nervous System (CNS). The inhibitory effect of GABA is essential for many vital biological processes such as sleepawake cycle, motor activity, memory formation and cognition. Therefore, production of GABA-rich products has attracted many scientists to explore the vital role of GABA Biochemically, GABA is produced through decarboxylation of glutamate by the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). Interestingly, many lactic acid bacteria LAB), fungi and yeasts possess GAD. Among these microbes, only LAB can be considered as safe to use. Studies reported that marine LAB possess a promising potential compared to their counterparts as they produce distinctive bioactive compounds due to its growth in the marine environment and its exposure to harsh conditions and high salinity, which made it very interesting as bioactive starter cultures Therefore, this study aims to isolate promising marine LAB producing GABA with probiotic properties and molecular characterization of the genes associated with GABA production. The results obtained can be summarized as follows.
