المستخلص This research discusses the problem of focusing on designing public parks depending on visual perspective and neglecting the other senses. This may cause insufficiency in users’ perception of such parks and a lack of integration with nature because of the shortage of sensual influences needed to connect people with context. This issue also affects visually impaired users who may face difficulties in finding their way through parks or enjoying them due to a lack of sensual stimuli. The research aims to conclude design guidelines and assessment method for public parks to support various types of sensory influences to improve the accessibility and enjoyment of both visually impaired and sighted users. Also, it aims to evaluate sensory stimuli in public parks. The research was divided into six chapters. The first three chapters present the theoretical and literature review parts, whereas the fourth chapter presents the analytical and practical parts. The fifth chapter includes research results, and the sixth chapter presents a summary, discussion, recommendation, and future research. Chapter one discusses the introduction of the research problem, research aim, methodology, and the structure of the study. Chapter two discusses human perception and its types, processes, and shortages in perception for both the sighted and visually impaired. It also discusses the role of sensory systems in perception and how they could be integrated into design for improvement in perception. Chapter three discusses public parks and their physical components. It then discusses the enhancement of the public perception of public parks through landscape sensory stimuli as presented in sensory gardens. Then, three international models of sensory gardens were analysed. A survey for the visually impaired was conducted based on their findings. It also contains an introduction to a research case study of Al-Azhar Park in Cairo by observing and evaluating its sensory stimuli. A practical experiment was conducted with the contribution of volunteers to compare their results with the researcher’s results. |
