Abstract

Summery Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex systemic autoimmune disorder which is characterized by chronic inflammation resulting in widespread organ dysfunction. In SLE patients, autoantibodies directed against nuclear proteins and DNA are secreted from B-lymphocytes. Many other immune system members also contribute to disease development and novel evidences point the possible participation of natural killer (NK) cells that represent a link between innate and adaptive immunity in SLE.This study was carried out to determine immunophenotype and frequency of the two major NK cell subsets (namely; CD56dim and CD56bright) in the peripheral blood of SLE patients with and without lupus nephritis and in the renal tissue of those patients with lupus nephritis and relate them with disease activity. Also, the study intended to determine CXCR3, CD161 expression in the peripheral blood and renal tissues of SLE patients.
