Abstract

Emotional intelligence (EI) is recognized as an important personal
attribute involved in nurturing the patient doctor relationship (PDR) and
the patient satisfaction, those doctors who are more aware of their
patients‟ emotions are more successful in treating them than their less
perceptive colleagues. So the doctor is assumed to be a key figure in
facilitating and managing the PDR by influencing the way patients
perceive and feel about their treatment and illness. (80)
The general objective of the present study was to show the
importance of having emotional intelligent physicians in order to get a
strong patient doctor relationship with the patients and so to get more
patient satisfaction with the health care services provided.
The study was conducted on 33 family health units and four general
hospitals distributed all over Suez governorate, Egypt. A number of 140
physician and 434 patients were participating in this study.
An English valid and reliable questionnaire which is the Quick
Emotional Intelligence Self Assessment Quistionnaire. (128)
The self administered questionnaire was provided for physicians
assessing their Emotional Intelligence. As having a score (0-24) means
that the physicians are in the area for enrichment, (25-34) area of
effective functioning and (35-40) area of enhanced skills.
The patients were interviewed by an Arabic valid and reliable
questionnaires ( Patient doctor relationship questionnaire and patient
satisfaction questionnaire). (129)
During their waiting time in front of the outpatient clinics of

patient record, The better relationship, better satisfaction with his
physician.
This study revealed that the distribution of overall emotional
intelligence among physicians where as the highest percentage of
physicians (51.4 %) are present in the area of enrichment as regards the
overall emotional intelligence score, followed by the percentage of
physicians( 30.10%) are present in the area of effective functioning as
regards the overall emotional intelligence score ,And the lowest
percentage of physicians (18.50%) are present in the area of enriched
skills as regards the overall emotional intelligence score.
There was a significant difference among physicians as regards
different levels of the overall emotional intelligence and physician‟s sex
(p-value < 0.001), specialty (p-value 0.002),qualifications (p-value
<0.001),years of experience (P-value< 0.001).
The most affecting factors for higher score of EI were found that
being females (p value <0.001) and working as family physicians (P
value 0.005) Were the most affecting factors for higher EI.
There was a positive correlation between overall emotional
intelligence and its dimensions scores and patient doctor relationship and
that there was a positive correlation between overall emotional
intelligence and its dimensions scores and patient satisfaction.
This is due to the fact that when the doctor was keen to take into
account the feelings of the patients and to get close to them and support
them psychologically, the more patients tend to develop a positive
relationship with the doctor.
Based on previous studies there is a direct correlation between
medical education and emotional intelligence competencies, which makes

the field of medical education an ideal one in which to integrate further
EI training. (108)
when EI is conceptualized as an ability that can be taught, learned,
and changed, it may be used to address the specific aspects of the
clinician–patient relationship that are not working well. For this reason,
teaching EI should be a priority in the field of medical education in order
to better facilitate this relationship in the future. (43)
The Emotional Intelligence of the physicians can be improved by
Training programs included in their educational curriculum during
studying years rather than during their training years as a GP.
