Abstract Emotional intelligence (EI) is recognized as an important personal attribute involved in nurturing the patient doctor relationship (PDR) and the patient satisfaction, those doctors who are more aware of their patients‟ emotions are more successful in treating them than their less perceptive colleagues. So the doctor is assumed to be a key figure in facilitating and managing the PDR by influencing the way patients perceive and feel about their treatment and illness. (80) The general objective of the present study was to show the importance of having emotional intelligent physicians in order to get a strong patient doctor relationship with the patients and so to get more patient satisfaction with the health care services provided. The study was conducted on 33 family health units and four general hospitals distributed all over Suez governorate, Egypt. A number of 140 physician and 434 patients were participating in this study. An English valid and reliable questionnaire which is the Quick Emotional Intelligence Self Assessment Quistionnaire. (128) The self administered questionnaire was provided for physicians assessing their Emotional Intelligence. As having a score (0-24) means that the physicians are in the area for enrichment, (25-34) area of effective functioning and (35-40) area of enhanced skills. The patients were interviewed by an Arabic valid and reliable questionnaires ( Patient doctor relationship questionnaire and patient satisfaction questionnaire). (129) During their waiting time in front of the outpatient clinics of different health facilities all over Suez governorate. The more score the Summary 79 patient record, The better relationship, better satisfaction with his physician. This study revealed that the distribution of overall emotional intelligence among physicians where as the highest percentage of physicians (51.4 %) are present in the area of enrichment as regards the overall emotional intelligence score, followed by the percentage of physicians( 30.10%) are present in the area of effective functioning as regards the overall emotional intelligence score ,And the lowest percentage of physicians (18.50%) are present in the area of enriched skills as regards the overall emotional intelligence score. There was a significant difference among physicians as regards different levels of the overall emotional intelligence and physician‟s sex (p-value < 0.001), specialty (p-value 0.002),qualifications (p-value <0.001),years of experience (P-value< 0.001). The most affecting factors for higher score of EI were found that being females (p value <0.001) and working as family physicians (P value 0.005) Were the most affecting factors for higher EI. There was a positive correlation between overall emotional intelligence and its dimensions scores and patient doctor relationship and that there was a positive correlation between overall emotional intelligence and its dimensions scores and patient satisfaction. This is due to the fact that when the doctor was keen to take into account the feelings of the patients and to get close to them and support them psychologically, the more patients tend to develop a positive relationship with the doctor. Based on previous studies there is a direct correlation between medical education and emotional intelligence competencies, which makes Summary 80 the field of medical education an ideal one in which to integrate further EI training. (108) when EI is conceptualized as an ability that can be taught, learned, and changed, it may be used to address the specific aspects of the clinician–patient relationship that are not working well. For this reason, teaching EI should be a priority in the field of medical education in order to better facilitate this relationship in the future. (43) The Emotional Intelligence of the physicians can be improved by Training programs included in their educational curriculum during studying years rather than during their training years as a GP. |
