Abstract

Job satisfaction is a very important attribute, which is frequently measured by organization. Job satisfaction is a pathway to high productivity and to high quality production, and that the job itself must provide sufficient variety, sufficient complexity, sufficient skill to engage the abilities of the worker. Job satisfaction reflects a degree of congruity between a worker’s expectations of the job and experience of the job. It expresses the amount of agreement between these expectations and the rewards the job provides. Job satisfaction is recognized as one among other variables including ability and motivation at attended work, which can influence nurse absenteeism. Nurses, who are more satisfied with their jobs, are more likely to stay on job. High job satisfaction is a hall mark of a well-managed organization. Satisfaction with a pleasurable work experience can increase the desire to attend work.
The present study aimed identifying the factors affecting job satisfaction among head nurses working in Ain Shams University Hospitals through, assessing levels of job satisfaction among them and investigating the relationship between certain demographic characteristics of the head nurses and their job satisfaction. The study was conducted at Ain Shams University Hospitals by using a descriptive design. Subjects included in the were (130) head nurses. Data were collected using a self administered questionnaire sheet. It consisted of two main parts: Part I: this part was intended to collect data about the subjects sociodemographic characteristics. Part II: this part was intended to assess the factors affecting job satisfaction among head nurses and the level of job satisfaction.
The tool consisted of 64 items divided into two basic categories of factors namely the hygiene and motivation factors.
The main findings of the study were as follows:
• The majority of head nurses agreed upon the effect of total hygienic and motivating factors were (86.2%) and (83.1%) agreement level. While only, less than half of the head nurses in the study sample were satisfied with hygienic factors (45.4%) and motivating factors (44.6%).
• There was no relation of statistical significant between certain demographic characteristics of the head nurses and their job satisfaction.
• The only factor that had a statistically significant association with the present study head nurses’ satisfaction and agreement upon the effect of hygienic and motivating factors on their satisfaction was their work place (hospital).
• Based on the results of the study, it was recommended that.
1. Improving work conditions, provide offices room, rest rooms, laundry for head nurses to increase job satisfaction
2. Provision of health insurance or medical care program for head nurses to increase their feeling of safely and security and consequently increasing their satisfaction
3. Improving the work system of promotion, salaries and incentives, and reorganization of achievement.
4. Conducting training program and providing the opportunity to learn new skills and abilities should be encouraged.
5. Top management can use the results of this research in order to identifying factors that affecting job satisfaction and trying to managing it.
