Abstract

In the present study the attempt was made to investigate the effectiveness of suggested English language program in the development of Al-Azhar secondary school students’ environmental literacy in light of Holy Quran and Sunnah. The previous studies conducted on environmental literacy show that this topic is still in its infancy. The present study in turn tries to fill in this gap by developing a suggested English language program for enhancing the teaching of environmental literacy for Al-Azhar secondary school students.
Reviewing existing literature revealed that sustaining and working on keeping the environment should emphasize environment education as a critical factor for justifying this end. Teachers carry a heavier burden in the realization of the significant goal of increasing the awareness and knowledge of learners of environmental issues. This, of course, requires taking many steps towards fundamentally altering the methods of our perception and thinking of the natural world around us. In order to do this, significant changes need to be done in the very nature of the education system, in terms of content, curriculum, teaching methods and strategies, assessment and evaluation. Although individual initiatives are welcome in this respect, but it is necessary to alert the philosophy of the regular education to make it based on and aimed at achieving the ultimate aims of sustainability.
Environmental literacy is essential and it aims at educating students to be able to deal with environmental challenges and problem in the correct manner. Environmental literacy results from education. Improving curricula has a great role in education reform. The main purpose of this study was to develop Al-Azhar secondary schools’ English curricula. Al-Azhar is one of the most important institutions that shape global Islamic discourses in the world. In 2015, in addition to Egyptian students, Forty thousand foreign students learn in Al-Azhar. They will be messengers of Islam all over the world.
