Abstract

Summary
Andropause, is the counterpart of menopause which is at times referred to as “male menopause”. It’s a type of hormonal change where in the testosterone levels of a man depletes and commonly experienced by men who reaches their second adulthood, which may start as early as thirty-five or as late as sixty-five. Once a man’s production of testosterone level goes down, it will bring significant change to a man’s life. Depending on how a male individual will react to the situation. So, it may be an advantage or a disadvantage for it (Dohle, Arver, Bettocchi, et al., 2012).
In addition to; men experience from unpredictable mood swings, nervousness and irritability, neck aches and backaches, memory losses, decrease concentration, loss of interest and self-confidence, increased anxiety or fear, decrease or loss of sexual enjoyment, feeling fat or gaining weight, loss of interest in sex and erectile power in addition taking longer to recover from illnesses or injuries (Charlton and Smith, 2009).
The present study aimed to assessing level of couples awareness and reactions regarding andropause.To achieve the study objective, a descriptive study had been implemented at gynecological clinics at Ain shams University Maternity Hospital.
A purposive sample technique was used and this technique followed for daily data collection till the completion of the specified period of data collection. Two hundred eighty couples were included in the study that started from the beginning of December 2012 till the beginning of June 2013. It has been done through using two tools of data collections that named andropause arabic questionnaire sheet and couples’ reactions sheet regarding andropause.
The present study revealed that:
• Regarding couples’ age, 38.0% of husbands their age ranged from 55 to 60 years. while, 54.1% of wives’ their age ranged between 45 to less than 50 years. The study revealed that 44.2% of husbands have higher educational level while, 42.0% of wives have secondary educational level. As regard their place of residence 100% of couple from urban area.
• The study revealed that chronic diseases affect the studied couples represent 58.0% and 56.0% among husbands and wives respectively. The most dominant chronic diseases affects couples’ is hypertension represent 41.7%, 57.8% respectively.
• As regards wives’ awareness regarding andropause only 31.4%, and 11.8% of them had complete correct awareness regarding concept and age of andropause.While, 34.0%, and 38.0% of husbands had complete correct awareness regarding concept and age of andropause respectively.
• There is statistical significant difference between husbands’ awareness regarding andropause and their age and working status.While, there is a highly statistical significant difference between husbands’ awareness regarding andropause and their marital duration, educational level and family income.
• There is highly statistical significant difference between wives’ reaction regarding andropause and their age , marital duration, educational level, working status, and family income. Meanwhile, there is no statistical significant difference between husbands’ reaction regarding andropause and their marital duration.
In conclusion, the study revealed that inspite of andropause is increasingly becoming a global health concern as the world’s population of aging males increases nevertheless less than one quarter of couple’s had complete correct awareness regarding andropause. Moreover, wives reaction regarding husbands andropause was more exaggerating than husbands’ reaction regarding this natural process. Based on this finding, the researcher recommended; There is an urgent need for educational programs targeting men by trained health care providers providing information regarding andropause. Provision of health programs for men to educate them on healthy life-styles to deal with this phase of life. Further researches are still needed to study different coping strategies for couples regarding andropause. effect of andropause on couple’s quality of life. factors affecting couple’s awareness and reaction regarding andropause.
