Abstract

Learning a new language requires good knowledge of vocabulary which includes isolated words and language chunks like idioms (Cooper, 1998). Idioms can be found in alllanguages and are used by the speakers of every language. English is a language which abounds with idioms. Glucksberg and McGlone (2001) stated that “Jackendoff (1995) estimates that there are as many idioms as there are words in American English, roughly 80,000” (p.77). Idioms transfer some underlying ideas, principles and values of a given culture. They also reflect certain cultural traditions and give insight into the historical background of the language. Idiomatic expressions draw appropriate images about the customs and lifestyle. They are a colorful aspect of the English language as they cover various aspects of life. Liu (2017) thought that idioms” contain rich, unique features of the language and culture” (p.104).
Idioms are a part of fixed expressions like compounds, clichés, quotes and names. They are used frequently in native speakers’ writing and speech and are found in formal and informal discourse (Cooper,1998).
