Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of propolis compared to calcium hydroxide as intracanal medicaments on postoperative pain in patients with necrotic pulp during two visit treatment. Methods: In this study, fifty six participants with an age ranged from 20-50 years old with no gender predilection, diagnosed as having necrotic in their single rooted single canal teeth were included in this study. Patients were randomly assigned into any of these two groups: group A: calcium hydroxide paste (comparator). group B: propolis paste (intervention). Access cavity was done under rubber dam isolation. Working length was determined by apex locator and confirmed by periapical radiograph; mechanical preparation was accomplished in the same visit by ProTaper Universal rotary files system. According to the randomization table, one of tested intracanal medicaments was placed with long disposable tip, and finally the access cavity was sealed with resin-modified glass ionomer filling. Patients were instructed to rate their pain score after 24, 48, 72 hours then after 7 days at the day of the second visit. After 7 days the intracanal medicament was removed then finally root canal was obturated. Results:The results of this study showed that there was no statistically significant difference in reduction of post-operative pain between calcium hydroxide paste (group A) and propolis paste (group B) in patient with necrotic pulp after 24 hours, 72 hours and 7 days. However, there was a statistically significant difference in reduction of the intensity post-operative pain between calcium hydroxide paste (group A) and propolis paste (group B) in patient with necrotic pulp after 48 hours
