Abstract Purpose: To compare the effect of latanoprost 0.005%,travoprost 0.004% & tafluprost 0.0015% on diurnal intraocular pressure fluctuation (IOP) & to determine the incidence of their side effects in newly diagnosed, primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. Study design: A prospective observational randomized controlled clinical trial. Patients and Methods: 60 patients newly diagnosed as POAG were randomly divided into 3 equal groups. Patients underwent a complete ophthalmological exam at presentation, 2 and 6 weeks.Phasing of IOP was done using a calibrated Goldman Applanation Tonometry & a questionnaire was used in order to evaluate their side effects. Results: The mean age of all groups was 52.98 ± 13.43 years. The 3 study groups were age and gender matched (p-values 0.76).The IOP at day of inclusion did not show a statistically significant difference between latanoprost, travoprost & tafluprost groups (p-values 0.27, 0.51 & 0.64 at 8 a.m, 2 pm & 8 pm respectively). Similar nonsignificant differences were noticed at 2 & 6 weeks follow ups. However, the tafluprost group showed a significant reduction in IOP on the 2nd week follow up visit at 2 pm (30.5% reduction, p-value 0.026). All three drugs showed a comparable & significant reduction of the IOP & IOP fluctuations. The occurrence of side effects (e.g periocular pigmentation, hypertrichosis & conjunctival hyperaemia) were similar in the three groups |
