Abstract

Purpose: Upper aerodigestive tract malignancies represent a special challenge in terms of oncological resection due to the complex function of the upper aerodigestive tract subsites which can be easily disrupted with large radical surgeries.Transoral laser surgery was introduced as a minimally invasive surgical alternative which aims at providing proper oncological resection with minimal function compromise. In this thesis we discuss the relevant literature and present the operative details, post-operative complications and outcomes of using transoral laser surgery in managing upper aerodigestive tract malignancies. Patients and methods: This is a combined prospective and retrospective descriptive study including patients that were treated with transoral laser surgery for upper aerodigestive tract malignancies in 4 tertiary referral centers (National Cancer Institute/Cairo University, University of Miami, University of Kansas and Northwestern University) in the period between January 2011 and December 2019. Collected data included patients{u2019} demographic data, operative details, post-operative complications, functional outcomes and follow up data. Data for each subsite (Oral cavity, pharynx, Larynx) was analyzed and reported separately
