Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including ulcerative colitis and Crohn{u2019}s disease is increasing in incidence globally and there is no direct method for diagnosis. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), is a glycoprotein, which is found to increase during inflammation. Objective Studying the role of fecal NGAL as a biomarker in diagnosing and monitoring IBD patients. Methods The study is an observational cross sectional study including 72 subjects; 26 suffered from UC, 11suffered from CD and 35 healthy controls.Stool samples were collected for measurement of fecal NGAL,Another fecal samples were obtained from twelve UC patients and four CD patients after control of their disease activity by treatments. Results Fecal NGAL demonstrated significantly higher levels in IBD patients compared to the control group. In addition, its level was higher in UC patients compared to CD. The fecal NGAL declined significantly following control of disease activity with treatment; p = 0.0004 Conclusion Fecal NGAL is a useful, reliable, simple and noninvasive biomarkerin diagnosis and monitoring IBD |
