Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of polarized light therapy in treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcer. Sixty men patients having partial or full thickness superficial diabetic ulcer complaining from delayed healing of ulcer for more than three months participated in this study.Their age ranged from 40 to 50 years. They were selected from El- Agouza Police Hospital in Egypt. They were randomly assigned into two groups (A&B) of equal numbers. group (A) Study group: received traditional medical treatment in form of (Debridement, Dressing , Control of infection and Revascularization) In addition to pulse polarized light therapy (three sessions per week for 12 weeks). group (B) Control group: received traditional medical treatment only same as group (A). Evaluation: for both groups (A&B) were done before starting and after the end of treatment (12 weeks) through measuring wound surface area (WSA), ulcer volume assessment to measure volume of wound and Accu-check active blood glucose meter to measure blood glucose level (before every treatment session) for each patient. Results: In group (A): There was statistically significant decrease in wound surface area with percent of change 31% and significant decrease in ulcer volume with percent of change 22.15 %. In group (B): There was significant decrease in wound surface area with percent of change 26.06% and significant decrease in ulcer volume with percent of change 18.07 %. Comparison between both groups A&B after end of treatment showed significant decrease in wound surface area and ulcer volume in group A much better than group B.Conclusion:the results of this study concluded that polarized light therapy is effective in reducing chronic diabetic foot ulcer
