Abstract

Introduction:Lead has many uses in industrial world, one of them is as alloys used for soldering and welding. Aim:The aim of this work is to assess the role of Kidney injury molecule one (KIM-1) in detecting early nephrotoxicity in a group of lead exposed workers (solderers).Subjects and methods:This study was conducted on 35 lead exposed workers compared to 35 non-exposed individuals, where medical history, clinical examination, and laboratory investigations in the form of: measuring of blood lead level, the urinary level of KIM-1, serum uric acid, creatinine, urea, electrolytes (sodium, potassium), CBC, liver enzymes serum lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides) and urine analysis. Results: Statistical analysis of blood lead levels of the studied groups reveals higher values of blood lead level among the exposure group.Statistically significant (p<0.05) differences were found between exposed and control as regards the prevalence of some anemic manifestation, but there is no difference in symptoms of renal failure, GIT symptoms of lead toxicity, and neurological manifestations of lead toxicity.Statistically significant higher values of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure are found, despite all the values are within normal ranges. No statistical significant difference was found as regards standard renal functions (uric acid, blood urea and creatinine). Urinary kim-1 values statistical analysis is significant (p<0.001) among the exposure group
