Abstract

Postharvest decay is the major factor limiting the extension of storage life of many fresh harvested commodities. Isolation and identification of associated fungi to assess the effect of some alternative fungicides were studied. Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium italicum, Alternaria citri and Geotrichum candidum were the dominant isolated pathogen from infected citrus fruits. Studying the effect of hot water treatment on the infected fruits showed that the highest effect was recorded on disease severity at 59 °C for 60 seconds. Fruits treated with chemical fungicides in combination with hot water treatment on fruit rot showed negative results in controlling orange fruit rot. Using clove, cinnamon, thyme, ginger, garlic, and mint essential oils to tested the orange fruit rot infection had the highest effect at 0.5 and 0.4 %. Benzoic acid had the highest effect in reduction the fungal growth and fruit rot caused by the tested pathogens. Significantly, the study provides a model for alternative methods and ecofriendly methods for controlling orange fruit rot compared with traditionally methods or chemical control methods.
