Abstract

Libya is one of the poorest countries in term of known information on solitary bee diversity. Al-Jabal Al-Akhder is loctated in the Northeast coastal strip area, comprises 60% of wild and cultivated plants recorded in Libya. The objective of this study was to prepare a checklist of solitary bee species in the area as preliminary research on bees for the country. Hundreds of bees specimens were collected from different locations of Al bayda, 32°45’40.4”N 21°44’51.4”E (619m), Alwasita 32°51’08.83”N 21°43’43.91”E (336 m), Cyrene 32°48’55.99”N 21°2’05.13”E (634 m), Sussa 32°53’47.86”N 21°58’15.74”E (15 m) and other sites. The total number of bee species collected bees from Al-Jabal Al-Akhder, were 60 species and it was expected that the area is very rich in term of bee diversity. The recorded species for each family were 4, 4, 6, 21 and 25 species for each ofAndrenidae, Colletidae, Halictidae (short tongue bees), Megachilidae and Apidae (long tongue bees), respectively.
Key words: solitary bees, nesting habitats, biodiversity, pollination, Al-Jabal Al-Akhder Region, Libya.
