Abstract

Penile erection is a very complex process which requires a
delicate and coordinated equilibrium among the neurological, vascular
and the tissue compartments. It also includes arterial dilation,
trabecular smooth muscle relaxation, and activation of the corporeal
veno occlusive mechanism.
Many trials were done to find a new treatment modality that
would provide a rehabilitative or curative effect for ED. This modality
should affect the endothelial function and improve penile
hemodynamics. One of these modalities was low-intensity
extracorporeal shockwave therapy.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and
safety of focused Li-ESWT in ED subjects compared to medical
treatment on a prospective clinical trial for 12 weeks.
This clinical study included 50 ED participants; of them 25
were allocated to shockwave group while the other 25 were on the
medical treatment group and all cases were followed up for 12 weeks.
All the cases were diagnosed with Vasculogenic ED and none of them
had any late onset hypogonadism in both s There was no statistically
significant difference between the study groups for all demographic
and baseline variables with P>0.05.
After 12 weeks of follow up, both groups showed an
improvement comparing baseline values to follow up variables for
both IIEF-5 and EHS(P<0.05). However, the difference between the
two groups was not statistically significant with P>0.05.
