Abstract

Background: Patients undergoing hemodialysis had difficulties to adapt with many physiological and psychological problems. The Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) focuses on the physiological and psychosocial adaptation of people to their environment. Aim: To examine the effect of the Roy Adaptation Model application on patients undergoing hemodialysis. Design: One group quasi- experimental design (pre and post) was used in this study. Subjects: The study data was collected from purposive adult patients undergoing hemodialysis (no=105) in 9 months at Port-Said General Hospital. Tool I: structure interview questionnaire. Tool II: Health literacy questionnaire Tool III: Designed model based on Roy adaptation model tools. Results: 51.4% of studied patients were male and 95.2% of them were married. 54.3% of them suffered from nausea during a hemodialysis session, 46.7% of them suffered from hypertension as a long-term problem with hemodialysis. The mean posttest health literacy score (19.8±4.2) was higher than the mean pretest score (15.8±3.1). Meanwhile, the mean posttest RAM modes score (246±39.2) were higher than the mean pretest score (218±40.3). Conclusion: There was an improvement in the mean score of health literacy of studied patients after application of RAM. Also, there was an improvement in adaptation level among patients undergoing to hemodialysis after application of RAM especially in Independence and Interdependence mode. Recommendations: Develop an educational program about Roy Adaptation Model among patients undergoing to hemodialysis for healthcare providers and professionals to improve the medical care provided to the patient.
