Abstract

Background: Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a group of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Aim and objectives: The purpose of this study was to prove that MRS study of elderly patients with dementia will show a specific biomarker pattern of dementia patients and that MRS will be a beneficial diagnostic added value compared to other investigations. Subjects and methods: This was a case control study of a total of 40 patients. 20 neurologically confirmed dementia patients and 20 controls neurologically free population in Kasr Al-Aini teaching hospital. They all underwent MRS to measure metabolic changes in dementia and compare it with healthy subjects. Patients were classified into 2 groups: group (A): including 20 neurologically normal patients, and group (B): including 20 neurologically referred dementia patients from Kasr Al Ainy neurology department Results: Patient{u2018}s MRI diagnosis in group (A) show that all patients had normal MRI findings and corresponding MRS values while in group (B) their was a statistically significant difference between groups MRS values, and there were statistically significant differences between groups where P<0.001as regard each of MRS metabolites, mainly decrease in the NAA/Cr ratio in group B
