Abstract

This research aims to study the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among diabetes type1 children in Suez Canal university hospital aiming to increase awareness about iron deficiency anemia among children with type 1 diabetes as there are relatively few studies.
90 Children participate in this study already diagnosed with diabetes type 1 in the Suez Canal university hospital between 3-17 years old, not obese with no current infection, malignancy, autoimmune disease, or chronic infection.
A history was taken from the patients including personal, present, and past history also the physical examination was done including Anthropometric (height, weight), full-body examination, especially for signs suggestive of anemia (e.g., pallor, tachycardia, hyperdynamic circulation, koilonychia.. etc.) and signs of chronic disease and investigations, were done including complete blood count, serum ferritin, serum iron, and glycated hemoglobin.
All statistical analysis was performed using the statistical package for social sciences the results showed that the prevalence of Iron deficiency anemia was among diabetes type 1 children is 56.7% and it was more among age 7- 11 years old diabetic children as it represents 41.2%.
Iron deficiency anemia was more among diabetic females than males and also was more among disease duration between 2-4 years by 70%.
The current study also found that the mean of HBA1c in the anemic patients was 7.81% which i s statically significantly higher than non-anemic patients which were 7.4% with a negative correlation between hemoglobin, serum iron, and serum ferritin, which means that the presence of iron deficiency anemia leads to higher levels of HBA1c in diabetic children.
