Abstract Haemorrhage contributes to 25% of maternal demises worldwide. Placenta previa or low-lying placenta i.e. Placenta attached to lower uterine segment, is an important cause of antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage and is associated with some foetal and neonatal complications as well (Karmakar et al., 2019). The term placenta previa should be used when the placenta lies directly over the internal os. For pregnancies at more than 16 weeks of gestation the term low-lying placenta should be used when the placental edge is less than 20 mm from the internal os on transabdominal or transvaginal scanning (TVS) (Jauniaux et al., 2018). The precise pathophysiology of this serious condition is not exactly known. However uterine scaring is a potential risk factor. Other risk factors for placenta previa include advanced maternal age, high parity, history of placenta previa and congenital uterine malformations (Arlier et al., 2017). |
