Abstract

Introduction and objectives: Examination of the external genital organs is an important part of the routine physical examination of the newborn infant. Early recognition of micropenis is important as they may be the only obvious manifestation of pituitary or hypothalamic hormonal deficiencies at birth. Studies suggest that differences in penile anthropometry may exist between different populations. With changing attitudes and advances in therapies in neonatal intensive care, a new population of surviving preterm infants is emerging. The lack of age appropriate normal data in this preterm group may therefore compound the diagnostic difficulties raised by the problem of an infant with micropenis in association with other genital abnormalities. Preterm infants are rarely investigated appropriately. No such comparable published data exist for Egypt. To help overcome this problem, this study aimed to establish a normal range and its relationship with gestational age, birth weight and birth length. Methods: This study was a cross sectional prospective study on 1000 apparently well healthy preterm male newborns. Stretched penile length, penile circumference and penile diameter were measured during the first 72 hours of postnatal life. Birth weight, length and head circumference were measured and recorded. Results: The mean (±SD) stretched penile length (SPL) was 2.431 (±0.443) cm ranged from 1.5 to 3.8 cm. The mean (±SD) of penile circumference(PC) was 3.012(±0.638)cm ranged from 1.5 to4.5cm.The mean (±SD) of penile diameter was 0.96cm(±0.200)ranged from 0.48 to1.43cm There is a significant correlation between penile length or penile circumference and the gestational age, birth weight, length, head circumference or abdominal circumference
