Abstract

Aim: Analysis of surgical outcome of breast cancer patients undergoing surgery in breast unit, 1st settlement hospital, National Cancer Institute, Cairo University. Patients & methods: All breast cancer patients underwent surgery in breast unit, 1st settlement hospital, National Cancer Institute, Cairo University from January 2017 until December 2018. Results: The study included 1646 patients who underwent surgery in breast unit, 1st settlement hospital, National Cancer Institute, Cairo University. Out of 1646 patients; 460 patients underwent BCS, 64 patients underwent immediate reconstruction. 1055 cases underwent mastectomy (either radical or simple) due to poor general condition and/or locally advanced disease. 17 patients underwent delayed reconstructive procedures. 50 patients underwent different axillary procedures. 93 patients underwent oncoplastic procedures (some of them had more than one procedure during study period). 96.72% of the cases were malignant, only 3.28% were benign 74 cases had Carcinoma insitu either alone or with another invasive form of malignancy. IDC is the most frequent invasive type among the patients and accounts for about 84.13% of invasive type. Out of 1592 malignant cases only 50 cases had local or nodal recurrence during follow up period all was proved by Tru cut biopsy or excisional biopsy. Twenty-three cases (24.73%) out of the 93 cases who underwent oncoplastic procedures had wound infection which was controlled via IV antibiotics and repeated dressings
