Abstract There is an increasing worldwide interest in the application of photodynamic therapy, nanocarriers and microneedles for the local treatment of cancer. With high morbidity and mortality, cancer remains the main cause of human death worldwide due to recurrence and metastasis [1]. Skin cancer is the world’s most common type of cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), skin cancer has been increasing over the past decades with a global estimation of 500,000 melanoma and over 1,000,000 non melanoma cases reported annually with high mortality rate reaching one person dying every four minutes [2]. Beside the priceless loss of lives, cancer represents a significant economic burden to society and health services in both developing and developed countries. The annual cost of treating skin cancers in the US is estimated at $8.1 billion [3]. |
