Abstract

Ambulatory or daycase surgery is a type of surgery that requires the use of new surgical and anaesthetic techniques providing fast and satisfying recovery.
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) society was established in 2001 to provide guidelines for different types of surgeries in order to promote fast recovery with better quality replacing the term fast tracking that focused only on the speed of recovery.
The concept of premedication in anaesthesia is an old concept but recently its target has developed from delivering the patient to the operating theatre heavily sedated with dry mouth into delivering a conscious yet calm patient with the onset of pain control procedure preoperatively.
Many premedicant drugs have been introduced recently. Gabapentenoids being one of them. Gabapentin and pregabalin are both α2δ receptors antagonists which were originally developed as anti epileptic drugs but then proved to have analgesic, anxiolytic and anti convulsant effects and were widely used in anaesthetic practice recently due to their tolerability and efficacy regarding pain control and opioid sparing.
This study aimed primarily at studying the effect of pregabalin premedication on anaesthetic requirements in knee arthroscopic procedures done under general anaesthesia (TIVA). other secondary aims included the effect of pregabalin premedication on postoperative recovery time, sedation, analgesia requirements and patient’s and surgeon’s satisfaction.
The current study was conducted on 112 patients admitted to orthopaedic department of Menoufia University Hospitals for whom elective knee arthroscopy was planned. All patients were above 18 years old with no history of renal of liver diseases, normal coagulation profile and no history of pregabalin use.
