Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by increased blood glucose level mainly due to deficiency in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Prolonged hyperglycemia leads to disturbances in most metabolic processes inside the human or animal body. Untreated cases of DM resulted in severe vascular and tissue damage leading to serious complications such as nephropathy, neuropathy, eye complication and cardiovascular complications. Worldwide, it was recorded that about 200 million people with DM in 2010, and it is expected to reach 300 million by 2025. Oral hypoglycemic drugs for DM directed mainly on regulating and decreasing blood sugar to be within the normal level, but unfortunately with significant side effects. Herbal medicine has long been used as an alternative medicine with an important source of potential therapeutic agents for diabetes, because of ease of availability, low cost and less side effects. Among this herbal medicine, the Moringa oleifera tree, known as ‘drumstick tree’. The therapeutic effects of MO are multifactorial and related to the antioxidant components as vanillin, epicathechin, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, kaempferol, cinnamic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, phenolics, glucosinolates, great amount of flavonoids, triterpenoids, sterols, phenolics, alkaloidal constituents and a highly appreciable levels of vitamins A, C and E. |
