Abstract

The performance of non-metallic sliding element textured bearing was investigated. The study included the elastic deformation of the bearing wall with surface texture. There are distinctive bearing materials utilized in the modern purposes especially the non-metallic materials. An analysis was performed to study the influence of textured surfaces in improving hydrodynamic performance of the elastic bearing. The results were divided into several parts starting with the comparison between the different non-metallic materials. The comparison between two suitable non-metallic materials showed that the Nylon 6 is superior to the high-density Polyethylene (HDPE). The results of elastic textured liners for Nylon 6 were compared with plain journal elastic bearing. The comparison between textured and plain bearings demonstrated that the textured bearing has a better performance than plain bearing. A comparison between bearings with surface texture based on the texture height, texture protrusion number and shape factor were carried out. The performance of the elastic textured bearing was superior to that of the plain elastic bearing at all eccentricity ratios. They also showed that the protrusion height, number of protrusions and protrusion shape factor were to be properly selected in order to get a better performance.
