Abstract

Introduction:
for abortion in early pregnancy surgical curette has been performed since the 1960s, but later Medical methods of abortion have been developed and are now an established alternative method of first trimester pregnancy termination (2).
The benefit of avoiding surgery include decreased surgical risk as infection, uterine perforation or bowel damage and anesthesia complication (3).
mifepristone combined with misoprostol is known as the most effective regimen among researched drugs for medical abortion, with approximately 90% success rate, and this regimen is used commonly in the United States and Western Europe (4).
Misoprostol monotherapy appears less effective than mifepristone plus misoprostol, but has a relatively high success rate of the 84% to 85% (5).
Of various methods of misoprostol monotherapy for first trimester abortion, a commonly used regimen includes 800 μg vaginally every 12 hours for a maximum of 3 doses or 800 μg sublingually every 3 hours for maximum of 3 doses (8).
Serum Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG) is a hormone secreted by the placenta, which increases as pregnancy progresses until 9 to 11 weeks of gestation but decreases in the event of a miscarriage. When drug administration for medical abortion is delayed due to late diagnosis of miscarriage, serum β-hCG is decreased compared to gestational age. In this case, serum β-hCG may be a more effective factor in predicting the success rate of abortion than gestational age (45).
Kim et al., found that β-hCG lower than 40,000 mIU/ mL may be a predictive factor of successful abortion within 24 hours after misoprostol administration (2)
Aim of the study:
This study aim is to study the serum β-hCG level as a predictive factors for success of medical abortion within 24 hours with misoprostol monotherapy in the first trimester of pregnancy
Subject and method:
This is a prospective observational study conducted at Al-Shohada Central Hospital including women with missed abortion up to 12 weeks of gestation presenting at the outpatient clinic.
After approval from faculty of medicine ethics committee for human research in February 2019 number OBSGN1 all enrolled women were provided informed consent of acceptance for participation in the study.
Duration:
The required sample seize was enrolled to the study from April 2019 to July 2021.
Data analysis, manuscript writing and revision took 2 months and after final revision we started the publication process at Menoufia Medical Journal. We received the acceptance for publication in April 2022
Setting:
In obstetric outpatient clinic at Al-Shohada Central Hospital, Al-Shohada, El-Menoufia Governate, Egypt
